NOMADS Travel (New Opportunities for Mountaineering, Adventure and Desert Sports)

n.o.m.a.d.s. New Opportunities for Mountaineering, Adventure and Desert Sports

Partners, Diana Taylor and Tony Howard

Nomads is a provider to the Tourist Industry of services and information, specialising in the exploration, development and promotion of adventure travel, climbing and trekking in the deserts and mountains of North Africa, the Middle East (particularly Jordan and Wadi Rum), also in India and other exotic places.

Our website also provides free information for travellers, climbers and trekkers interested in these areas.

Additionally, we are authors of, and contributors to, various climbing, trekking and travel guides and provide articles and photos for the press and outdoor media. We also lecture and have worked with TV and radio.

Mission

The prime purpose of nomads is to explore and carry out feasibility studies, development and promotion of environmentally aware adventure tourism in little known areas, usually in desert and / or mountain countries. nomads believe that in addition to benefiting their sponsor, their work will also help to open these areas to climbing, trekking and adventure tourism, in a way that will minimise change to the environment and maximise any potential benefits to the lifestyle of the indigenous peoples. This is a delicate path to tread but one which we care deeply about, and which offers an opportunity for us to give something back in return for a lifetime of climbing and travel.

Jordan

We discovered and initiated of the development of climbing and trekking in Wadi Rum in 1984 assisted by Jordan's Ministry of Tourism, Rum is now acknowledged as "one of the world's best desert climbing areas" and is described in Tony's book to 'Treks and Climbs in Wadi Rum, Cicerone Press.

Queen Noor subsequently sponsored work on our Cicerone Press guide to 'Jordan - Walks, Treks, Caves, Climbs & Canyons' to aid the economy of Jordan's other remote mountain areas.

Other guidebooks

Other guidebooks are Tony's guide to Classic Norway, Climbs, Scrambles & Walks in Romsdal (Cordee) and The Nativity Trail and Walks in Palestine (Cicerone Press)

Other countries and Projects

In addition to Jordan, other countries where we have worked on adventure tourism development (usually climbing and/or trekking) are Libya, Egypt, Oman, Madagascar and Nagaland (N E India). We have also done new climbs and/or treks in Morocco, Algeria, Sudan,Ethiopia, Iran, Norway, Yukon and BC, Canada, and Greenland.

We are currently (2008) involved in the development of the Abraham Trail from Turkey, through Syria and Jordan to Hebron in Palestine, possibly with an offshoot to Petra in Jordan, see www.abrahampath.org.
