BUFO VENTURES

Bufo Ventures Ltd specialises in tailor-made activity holidays and expeditions for independent groups and individuals in Nepal, India, Namibia and British Columbia. We can help you smooth the way to an enjoyable, unforgettable and adventurous trip.

NEPAL / TIBET

The Himalaya, the world's highest mountain range, stretches in a crescent over 3,000 km long from Afghanistan to Burma. All fourteen of the world's highest peaks are in the Himalaya and eight are in Nepal. Despite much recent modernisation, there are still very few roads in Nepal and the only way to travel is on foot or horseback. The difficulty of communication means some areas are virtually untouched by modern influences and life is still lived as it was centuries ago.

We can arrange camping or tea shop tours (with a guide and porter(s)) and suggestions are given for the Annapurna, Langtang and Everest regions which are virtually unaffected by the 10 year civil war with the Maoist guerillas. We can also arrange climbing trips on the 33 'trekking peaks' for which snow and ice experience is essential.

With flights between Kathmandu and Lhasa, Nepal is the gateway to Tibet. You can return to Kathmandu overland, visiting important Tibetan cultural sites en route (8 days) or extend the trip to Everest base camp (12 days).

INDIA

Our Himalayan trekking programme in India is based on Himachal Pradesh, Lahoul, Zanskar and Ladakh. While the rest of India suffers from the summer monsoon, the last three areas remain dry and are best visited in July and August. All the suggested routes are in remote areas not often visited by tourists and provide an insight into hill village life as well as a rich variety of flora and fauna.

The tours are provided by Mark Butterworth whose family has lived in this part of India for over 200 years. Treks can be arranged for independent travellers or you can join one of Mark's set departures.

NAMIBIA

Namibia is a vast and empty African country straddling the Tropic of Capricorn, bordered to the west by the Atlantic Ocean with South Africa to the south, Botswana to the east and Angola to the north. The central spine of the country is a 2,000m high plateau with the best farmland. To the east the land drops gently to the Kalahari Desert. To the west the dramatic escarpment of the Naukluft mountain range drops to the Namib Desert, stretching 1,600 km along the Atlantic Coast. This is one of the world's oldest deserts and the Namib-Naukluft National Park is one of the largest in Africa. In the north is the Etosha national park which provides some of the best game-viewing in Africa.

We can arrange treks on the Naukluft Trail, an 8 day mountain back-packing trip covering 120 km. This can be combined with visits to the sand dunes at Sossuvlei, the Atlantic resort of Swakopmund, the mountain ranges of Brandberg and Spitzkoppe, the bushman art at Twyfelfontein and Etosha national park.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

British Columbia is the westernmost province of Canada lying between the Rockies to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. To the north is Yukon and to the south Washington State. Between the Rockies and the Pacific there are several mountain ranges including the Cariboo, Monashee, Selkirk and Coastal ranges. British Columbia boasts Canada's only temperate rainforest and it is a hiker's paradise.

We have chosen three very different areas which offer a variety of activities: Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island, Chilcotin Ranch in the centre of the province and Wells Gray Provincial Park to the west of the Rockies. These can be combined in many different ways to make up a holiday of your choice.
